Inauguration Ceremony of the Project for Urgent Relocation of Ferry Terminal

On 15th January 2020, the inauguration ceremony of the Project for Urgent Relocation of Ferry Terminal was held at Dili Port. The ceremony was attended by: Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, H.E. Mr. NAKAYAMA Norihiro, Minister of Transport and Communication Timor-Leste, H.E. Mr. José Agostinho da Silva, Chargé d' Affairs, a.i., Embassy of Japan in Timor-Leste, Mr. HIGASHIMOTO Shingo; government officials and other invited guests.

The Project consists of constructing: (1) around 100m-long and 20m-wide Jetty which two ferries can accommodate at the same time for 24 hours; (2) 55m x 52m Platform with movable land platform; and (3) necessary facilities such as Illumination, Water supply, Power supply, Fire hydrant, and Security equipment. The construction of the project was carried out by Japanese contractor Tobishima Corporation and jointly supervised by Japan Port Consultants, Ltd and Ides Inc. with a grant amounting to ¥.2.197 billion (approximately USD 21million). The project employed more than 90 local workers.

The construction of the project aims to realize efficient and safe operation of passenger transportation by relocating of the existing terminal where there is confusion of movement between container being handled by equipment and ferry passengers. The new Ferry Terminal is located in the West side of the Dili Port. With this new Jetty, two more ferry can be accommodated in the same time during 24 hours. The new ferry terminal will provide efficient and safe transportation for both people and cargos and will accelerate Timor-Leste's development especially in the area of industries and tourism."

It is expected that by construction of this facility, the number of sea transport will increase so that people movement will also increase as well as goods transport between remote areas and to create new routes beyond Oecusse and Atauro.
