On May 18, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko met with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Barham Salih for the first time at JICA headquarters in Tokyo.

At the outset, President Tanaka extended his congratulations to High Commissioner Salih on his appointment this past January. He also expressed his intention to further deepen the cooperation between JICA and UNHCR, which has spanned over two decades.

In response, High Commissioner Salih provided an overview of UNHCR’s goal of “50 by 35” - reducing by 50 percent the number of refugees and others in need of international protection in protracted displacement and dependent on humanitarian assistance by 2035 – and exchanged views on job creation and support for return.

UNHCR and JICA concluded a Memorandum of Understanding in 2007. By leveraging their respective strengths, both organizations continue to cooperate for empowering refugees and internally displaced persons in developing countries.
