On October 19, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko met with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Barham Salih at JICA headquarters in Tokyo.
At the outset, President Tanaka welcomed High Commissioner Salih back to Japan, following his previous visit this May. He also expressed his intention to further deepen the cooperation between JICA and UNHCR, which has spanned over two decades.
In response, High Commissioner Salih shared insights from his visits to countries across the globe. They exchanged views on the importance of facilitating higher educational opportunities for forcibly displaced persons.
JICA and UNHCR also renewed the Memorandum of Cooperation, which has been in place since 2007, and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration for refugees in developing countries. They agreed to promote socio-economic inclusion and self-reliance of refugees, as well as voluntary and sustainable return, as key pillars of cooperation, while leveraging their respective comparative advantages.
