On July 20, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam in Hanoi for the Project for Enhancing the Capacity of Food Safety Testing, Reference Testing and Consultancy to Contribute to Sustainable Agricultural Development, a technical cooperation project.

In Viet Nam, demand for safe food products is increasing due to the rising income of the nation in line with the country's economic growth, and comprehensive food safety management including the proper use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers as well as sanitation during distribution is required. Under these circumstances, in 2012, the Government of Viet Nam decided to establish a reference laboratory (RETAQ Center: Reference Testing and Agrifood Quality Consultancy Center) that could develop food inspection standards and provide technical guidance for the institutions in charge of such inspection.

Since 2019, in order to provide the RETAQ Center with the necessary inspection equipment and facilities, JICA has been implementing the Grant Aid “Project for Enhancing Laboratory Capacities of the Reference Testing and Agrifood Quality Consultancy (RETAQ) Center for Ensuring Safety of Agricultural and Fisheries Foods.” Through the new technical cooperation project, JICA aims to strengthen the food safety inspection capacity of staff at the RETAQ Center, and it is expected that the capacity of food safety inspection institutes in Viet Nam will be improved as a result.

By expanding and improving the capacity of the food safety inspection system in Viet Nam, this project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 2 (Zero hunger) and 3 (Good health and well-being). What is more, the project is positioned in the cluster "Building a Food Value Chain (FVC)" under JICA’s Global Agenda "Agricultural and Rural Development."
