The JASID was established in 1990 to promote academic research on international development. JASID is a cross-sectional and inter-disciplinary academic society dedicated to bringing together knowledge and experience related to international development in multiple disciplines, including economics, management, political science, law, sociology, anthropology, agriculture, education, technology, and medicine.

The JASID Main Association Award is conferred for outstanding research that has made significant academic contributions to the field of international development.

The paper “Community-wide Support for Primary Students to Improve Foundational Literacy and Numeracy: Empirical Evidence from Madagascar,” co-authored by Maruyama and Igei, rigorously evaluated the impacts of the JICA “School for All” project through a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Published in “Economic Development and Cultural Change,” a leading journal in development studies by the University of Chicago Press, the paper indicates that the findings of the study have been recognized as robust evidence. The research findings will also contribute to evidence-based policymaking and practice in development assistance, which led to the paper’s selection for the award.

Maruyama states that he will continue striving for advancements in international education development through sustained research efforts.
