Executive Director Mine Lectures on Human Security in Africa at a JICA Chair Lecture at Stellenbosch University, South Africa

On Feb. 26, 2025, a JICA Chair lecture was held at Stellenbosch University in South Africa by JICA. At universities around the world, the JICA Chair provides the opportunity to learn about Japan’s development experience. Mine Yoichi , Executive Director of the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute), who is also an Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University, lectured under the theme “Theory and Practice of Human Security: From Asia, Africa and Beyond.” Around 80 students and scholars joined in person or online.

Mine first introduced the history of the concept of human security and its current status. He then explained that in addition to publishing the flagship report series “Human Security Today ” every two years, the JICA Ogata Research Institute is working on the establishment of dashboard indicators to measure the status of human security around the world. Mine also shared that the JICA Ogata Research Institute has launched a new research project to study migration and human security in Africa.

An active discussion followed the lecture between Mine, Prof Guy Lamb, Department of Political Science, Stellenbosch University, and the participating students on the theory and potential practices of human security.
