A new blog post titled “Aligning policy, business, and society: Lessons from Japan’s approach to adopt and advance the SDGs ” written by Research Fellow Endo Kei and Executive Senior Research Fellow Sato Ichiro of the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute), has been released on the Brookings Institution’s website.

Drawing on a chapter in the book “For the World’s Profit: How Business Can Support Sustainable Development ,” this article explores Japan’s evolving and increasingly integrated approach to promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across government policy, the business community, and society at large. The blog highlights how Japan, once seen as a relative latecomer in mainstreaming the SDGs after their adoption in 2015, has made notable progress in recent years. Through a combination of bottom-up public awareness initiatives, top-down regulatory reforms, and targeted incentives for the private sector, Japan has significantly broadened its engagement with sustainability principles. The authors state: “This whole-of-society approach appears to foster mutually reinforcing dynamics of sustainability practices across various sectors.”
