Final Report “A Study on Asia’s Infrastructure Needs: Estimating Urban Rail Infrastructure Needs”
The report “Meeting Asia’s Infrastructure Needs,” published by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in February 2017 states that developing countries in Asia need to implement climate change mitigation efforts while also investing a total of $26.2 trillion from 2016 to 2030, or approximately $1.7 trillion annually, to sustain current levels of economic growth. The report estimates the demand for the power, communication, transportation, and water sanitation sectors between 2016 and 2030.
In addition to the four economic sectors that ADB has already provided estimates for, there are also many other social sectors, such as education, health, and disaster prevention. To estimate the total amount of investment needed by Asian counties, it is necessary to estimate the demands of these social sectors as well.
In this context, the JICA Research Institute has launched a research project titled “The Research on the Infrastructure Demand Forecast in Asia” to conduct macro level estimation and micro level data collection targeting education, health, disaster prevention and urban railways.
This report is the result of the project. It presents surveys on 24 Asian countries, including Armenia, Mongolia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia and forecasts the total length of the mass rapid transit (MRT) route needed to be constructed by 2030 and the investment in MRT development expected between 2016 and 2030.
