Report "Estimating Social Infrastructure Needs in Diverse and Dynamic Asia"
Although Asia has improved provisions for social infrastructure, parts of the region need further investment to support sustainable growth given economic and population dynamics.
This report estimates Asia’s funding needs and gaps in financing enhanced infrastructure in education, health, housing, and government facilities. Its micro and macro analysis reveals that overall Asia–Pacific will need US$26–$27 trillion—around 4.5%–4.6% of the region’s projected GDP—to meet social infrastructure needs between 2016 and 2030.
University education requires the greatest investment, 0.4% to 0.6% of Asia’s GDP. Health infrastructure requires investment approaching 1.1% of Asia’s GDP. Asia needs approximately US$13 trillion, 2.3% of GDP, to house its urban slum population. Needed government investment in building infrastructure is estimated at 0.1%–0.2% of Asia’s GDP.
The JICA Research Institute and the Institute for Economic and Social Research, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia prepared this report. It is a background paper for the JICA Research Institute’s research project "Research on Demand Estimate on Infrastructure in Asia."
