The JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development released an English book entitled “SDGs and Japan: Human Security Indicators for Leaving No One Behind,” which is a translated version of a Japanese book published by Akashi Shoten in November 2019.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are call for action by all countries, both developing and developed, including Japan. Based on a core principle of the SDGs, “Leave No One Behind,” Japan is also required to examine if its citizens’ survival, livelihood and dignity are ensured in a society in which everyone lives a life worthy of a human being. This book introduces the Human Security Indicators of Japan, which were compiled to identify visually by prefecture who, where and how people are often being left behind. It discusses who and what to focus on in addressing human security issues by sector.

Making this book accessible in English will enable the international audience to become familiar with the Human Security Indicators of Japan as comprehensive indicators for the elements of human security with an emphasis on human dignity at its heart. It also aims at sharing the Japanese approach and thus contributing to international discussion on how the SDGs should be implemented according to individual countries’ unique circumstances.

Visiting Fellows Mine Yoichi and Oscar Gomez, and Executive Senior Research Fellow Muto Ako contributed chapters to the Japanese book. Muto, Research Officer Takeuchi Kaito and Research Assistant Sugitani Kota took part in the publication of this translated book. Takasu Yukio, chairman of the NPO “Human Security” Forum and special advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Human Security, supervised the translation of the book.
