Thanks to their low environmental impact, reliable, and mass transportation capacity, urban railways are an invaluable part of society. The number of urban railways that have been operating for over 15 years, are increasing in major cities.

To that end, JICA focuses on the operation and maintenance, especially for the organization establishment and capacity building, etc. for more reliable and sustainable urban railway.

JICA will promote understanding of below issues on operation and maintenance for urban railways.

• New Lines: Necessary tasks to establish sound O&M systems.
• Existing Lines: Maintenance issues to keep the long-term and sustainable railway systems.
• Sharing the lessons from case studies of urban railways in Japan and all over the world.

The handbook is designed for project owners and other participants of urban railway projects. Mutual understanding to the issues and necessary measures from the study stage to the implementation stage of urban railway projects is expected.
