March 29, 2021

On Saturday March 27, 2021, His Excellency Mr. MATSUBARA Hideo, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Guinea, Mrs. Sanoh Mariama Camara, Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Sanitation and Hydraulics, Mr. Patrice Pépé Loua, General Manager of the Guinea Water Company (Société des Eaux de Guinée (SEG)), and Mr. SASADATE Koichi, the Head of JICA Guinea Field Office, delivered provided water treatment products to SEG at the Yessoulou water treatment plant, in Coyah prefecture.

This support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided of 30.8 tonnes of calcium hypochlorite and 83 tonnes of aluminum sulphate, two important chemicals for water purification. (€149,219 (≒1,814,732,500 GNF.) This emergency support was coordinated by Mr. SAKAMOTO Daisuke, who had been a Technical Advisor for the National Water Company (SEG), for countermeasures against infectious diseases such as the COVID-19 and Ebola. This support will also include educational activities. With this support, SEG will be able to supply safe water to residents in the water supply area, which is expected to contribute to the fight against the spread of infection.

Safe water is essential for daily life, especially during the pandemic of COVID-19 and Ebola, which require frequent handwashing. JICA has been supporting SEG as a partner for a long time, and based on this partnership, JICA has decided to provide emergency support in response to SEG's request.

Since 1990, Japan has provided grant aid and technical support to improve the water supply and distribution system in urban and rural communities, in partnership with SEG and SNAPE (Service National des Points d'Eau.) The Japanese government has implemented about 10 projects for SEG over the past 30 years, and the total amount of the projects amounted to over 85 million USD, including the construction of the 3rd water treatment plant in Yessoulou, where water treatment products was handed over this time.

Access to safe water is one of the essential pillars for the provision of basic social services, as human security.

It is also a key element in achieving the SDG priority goals on drinking water, health and sanitation, as well as Universal Health Coverage (UHC), one of the themes intensively discussed at the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7.)

Through this project, JICA will continue to support Guinea in its efforts toward development, and especially to provide assistance despite the urgency of the infectious disease epidemic.
