JICA has been supporting Pacific Island Countries including PNG through J-PRISM since 2011. So far in PNG, the waste collection system and Baruni landfill site were improved in the former phases, and these good practices are planned to be extended in other Urban Local Level Governments (ULLGs), namely Lae, Kokopo, Goroka and Alotau in this Phase 3.

The Joint Coordination Committee meeting of J-PRISM3 was held on Wednesday 9 April 2025, that was attended by the implementing agencies, targeted groups both in private and public sectors and JICA. It also provided an opportunity for project national counterparts to report back on their results of activities, successes, and challenges from the earlier phases of the project implementation, as well as map a way forward for activities in Phase 3 implemented from 2023 - 2028.

From the discussions, the project team presented updates on results of the activities including indicator reviews and suggestions based on the key project outputs. The project is heading into its third year of implementation and has promising outcomes including the Solid Waste Management Plan being under development and hopefully implemented soon in the four targeted ULLGs, the capacities of solid waste management including infrastructure management have been improved and the “3R and Return” system are being promoted through the public - private partnerships.

With the collective efforts from both the private and public collaboration, JICA encourages and continues to support the partner agencies to work together to ensure the success of the project.
