PII/IABEE's Formal Accession to the Washington Agreement and JICA Technical Cooperation Project Closing Ceremony

As part of JICA's technical cooperation project launched in 2014, the Indonesian Engineers Association /Indonesia Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (PII/ IABEE) closing ceremony was held at Jakarta. This event was held on Thursday, July 13, 2023 to celebrate PII/IABEE's recognition as an official Full Signatory member of the Washington Accord General Assembly. The Washington Accord is an international organization agreement composed of engineering higher education accreditation organizations from each country.

IABEE was established as part of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) and had been a Provisional Signatory status Washington Accord since 2019. Due to the pandemic, the Washington Accord suspended rules temporarily that require physical visits to assessment teams and decided on a two-stage membership review consisting of virtual and on-site screening. PII/IABEE became a conditional official member in 2022 after a virtual review, and after a field review, its full membership was reconfirmed in June 14, 2023 at 11.30 at IAE held in Taichung, Taiwan, granting all the privileges of Full Signatory membership.

The JICA technical cooperation project, which started in 2014, was set with the ultimate goal to officially become the member organization of the Washington Accord. The Indonesian partner is the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research and Technology, and the counterpart director general is the Director General of Higher Education. The implementation of this project has been entrusted to the Accreditation Board for Japan Engineering Education (commonly known as JABEE, a member organization of the Washington Accord). JABEE supports the establishment of IABEE, the development of accreditation criteria based on Outcomes-based Education (OBE), and the examination and accreditation of engineering educational programs (bachelor's programs in university in Indonesia for the State University and the Private University).

IABEE began accreditation of the engineering program study in 2016 and to date has accredited 99 programs at the state and private universities. A list of accredited programs can be found on the IABEE
website. https://evaluation.iabee.or.id/#/accreditation/summary/search

IABEE accreditation is voluntary and not legally mandatory, but the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research and Technology ranks the IABEE accreditation program as "Excellent". This exempts LAM-TEKNIK (formerly BAN-PT) from the five-year continuation certification required by law.

The purpose of accreditation is to improve the engineering education and promote OBE. JICA's technical cooperation projects are designed with the aim of improving engineering education in Indonesia to an international level and spreading it throughout the country. The formal accession of PII/IABEE to the Washington Agreement will be an important step forward for engineering education in Indonesia.
