Efforts to address climate change continue to accelerate regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the plenary meetings of the UN General Assembly in September 2020, many states made announcements on their roadmaps to reduce carbon dioxide emission and to achieve carbon neutrality. Moreover, extreme climate events such as torrential rain, floods and heatwaves are frequently occurring around the world, and it has been reported that global warming is one major cause of these.

Under such circumstances, measures for climate change adaptation are increasingly seen to be important, along with those for climate change mitigation that aim to reduce carbon dioxide emission. Meanwhile, many challenges remain in identifying what programs could lead to adaptation. Currently, efforts are moving forward by further developing existing programs.

In this forum, Mimura Nobuo, distinguished fellow at the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) and specially appointed professor at the Global and Local Environment Co-creation Institute of Ibaraki University, will give a keynote speech about domestic and international trends in current efforts for climate change adaptation. The content of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6 by the IPCC Working Group II), which is to be published in 2022, and discussions that took place in COP26 will be covered as well. Mimura will also make recommendations for Japan’s roles in global collaboration.

Furthermore, based on this keynote speech, we will invite Mimura and Narita Daiju, visiting fellow at JICA Ogata Research Institute and associate professor at the University of Tokyo, to a panel talk session. While taking questions from the audience, opinions on future efforts for climate adaptation will be extensively exchanged, with an aim to collect some suggestions on global collaboration in the future.
