2021.04.06

On Nov. 2, 2020, the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) hosted an online symposium entitled “Embracing Human Security in Meeting Global Challenges in the COVID-19/Post-COVID-19 Era” in commemoration of the first anniversary of the passing of Ogata Sadako, former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and former JICA president. An edited and condensed version of the symposium recording is now available to view.

International dignitaries including António Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations, Filippo Grandi, United Nations high commissioner for Refugees, and Ashraf Ghani, president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, sent video messages to commemorate the achievements and memorialize the legacy of Ogata. Moreover, with JICA Ogata Research Institute Director Takahara Akio acting as moderator, a distinguished panel of scholars and experts discussed how human security, a concept that Ogata advocated passionately, can be applied in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The symposium was featured in the NHK WORLD–JAPAN program “Human Security in the COVID19 Era–OGATA Sadako Memorial Symposium.” Streaming of the program and a summary report of the symposium are available at the links below.
