Major Projects in Mongolia

The Project for Strengthening Mediation System

Since the transition to a market economy in I990s, revitalization of private sector activities as well as social changes were accompanied by the increase of various disputes among citizens, and accordingly the needs for diversification of means of settling civil disputes have been increased. In this context, Government of Mongolia places priority on legal and judicial reform and institutional capacity strengthening of judicial institutions.

In view of the above and based on the request from the Government of Mongolia, the Government of Japan dispatched a Japanese long-term expert from 2004 to 2006 to support enhancing capacity of legal professionals and strengthening the function of the Association of Mongolian Advocates (hereinafter referred to as "AMA"). It was followed by the Legal Reform Support Project which was implemented from 2006 to 2008. As a result of these joint efforts, the Mediation Center was established in the AMA and the advocates were trained as mediators.

The new project has begun 2009 with the purpose of introducing the mediation system in the judicial system under collaboration the Supreme Court of Mongolia and the AMA.
