JICA, MoHS is soon to be completed the project for Enhancement of Medical Education in Myanmar (PEME): For further implementation of quality medical education in Myanmar

JICA/ Japan and Ministry of Health and Sports is soon to be completed the "Project for Enhancement of Medical Education in Myanmar" (PEME) on 6th August 2019. For four and half years, the project provided opportunities for study for various medical doctors- total 67 medical doctors: 12 medical doctors successfully completed Ph.D and 55 medical doctors and clinical staff successfully finished their short terms trainings.

Participating universities of Myanmar is not only from Yangon and Mandalay (University of Medicine 1- Yangon , University of Medicine 2- Yangon, and University of Medicine, Mandalay) but also from University of Medicine, Magway- and it is expected that the medical system can be covered not only urban area but also rural area. Besides, the fields of the study are varies, namely, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine and Public health. The participants studied in major universities in medicine, namely, Chiba University, Kanazawa University, Kumamoto University, Nagasaki University, Niigata University and Okayama University.

The participants of the program is expected to utilize the knowledge for enhancing the education and research capacity of medical universities in Myanmar; such as increased the number of highly qualified Ph.D. holders in medicine. The alumni network of the Programme may also contribute a lot for strengthening teaching and research community among the Medical Universities in Myanmar by having human network amongst them.

Mr. Masayuki Karasawa, Chief Representative of JICA Myanmar office says, "Japan and JICA will continue to cooperate with MoHS for the human resource development for health by combination of various activities by promoting partnership between Japan and Myanmar universities".

Achieving UHC by 2030 in Myanmar, development of human resources for health sector is one of the critical components to provide healthcare services to all in need. JICA has been supporting the Ministry of Health and Sports to improve quality of medical services in Myanmar by not only facilities and equipment but also capacity development of health/ medical staff in research and clinical skills in Myanmar.
