Activities in Pakistan

Project for Promotion of Student-Centered and Inquiry-Based Science Education

Background

Photo

Pakistan's National Education Policy 2009 highlights the importance of quality education. One of the significant measures taken by Government of Pakistan to improve the quality of education is the introduction of new national curricula in 2006. The key concept of the General Science curriculum is "Student-Centered and Inquiry-Based (SCIB) learning". However, most of teachers are unfamiliar with the SCIB concept and do not have much opportunities to equip themselves with new teaching methods in line with the new curriculum. To cope with this challenge, the project aims to equip teachers with the SCIB teaching methodology in the General Science Subject and further facilitate quality of education in classrooms.

Objective

Effective SCIN training model that ensures teachers to deliver SCIB science lessons is established.

Project Summary

The project is to establish effective SCIB training model that enables teachers to deliver SCIB science lessons. SCIB based teaching plans are developed by writers nominated from various education departments in 4 provinces and ICT. Master trainers from all over the countries are trained for SCIB based teaching in a class room. Master trainers further train teachers of piloted schools in ICT to further disseminate SCIB teaching in day to day classroom activities. Through the training programme, teaching plans are used as a supporting material for introducing SCIB teaching. These experiences are shared with the stakeholders of the project through seminars and workshops for further dissemination and integration of the training model.

Project Highlights

Photo

The project employs "lesson study" for the follow up training of teacher training in pilot area. In each lesson study workshop, a venue school teacher presents a science lesson, based on the lesson plan s/he develops. The lesson study shows the cost effective way of continuous professional development of teachers, which matches the needs of teachers in Pakistan. Teaching Though Easily Available Materials (TEAM) is also employed in the teaching plans and training so that teachers can perform practical with inexpensive material mostly available in the immediate surrounding of educational institutions where experimental equipments are not fully equipped.
