JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka held talks with Canadian Minister of International Development and La Francophonie Marie-Claude Bibeau at JICA headquarters in Tokyo on Dec. 18.

Mr. Kitaoka began the talks by expressing gratitude for Canada's cooperation with Japan, especially in the health sector, and he gave an introduction to Japan's and JICA's assistance policies and activities.

In her response, Ms. Bibeau mentioned that priorities for Canada's new administration, which took power in October, would include reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health, climate change, agriculture and gender. She also expressed particular admiration for Japan's efforts to disseminate the maternal and child health handbook, which was developed out of Japan’s own experience to educate mothers on pregnancy and child care, and to improve communication between mothers and health-care providers.

JICA will continue to cooperate with Canada, holding discussions with it and partnering together.
