JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Tokyo on April 11.
It was their second meeting, the first having taken place in October 2015.

Mr. Kitaoka started by saying JICA will continue its support for Sri Lanka, whose economy continues to grow steadily as it approaches upper-middle-income country status, helping improve living condition of conflict-affected and rural areas. Mr. Kitaoka said there are great possibilities for the tourism resources of Sri Lanka, and that he expects Sri Lanka to develop as it exploits its potential.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said he expects cooperation in such areas as tourism, logistics and science and technology to contribute greatly to the further development of Sri Lanka. He said he will pay full attention to the outcomes of the Preparatory Survey on New Integrated Urban Public Transport System Introduction Project in Colombo, and the Project for Formulation of Greater Kandy Urban Plan, for which JICA is providing assistance.

Mr. Kitaoka said further infrastructure improvement and human resources development are needed to build up the nation of Sri Lanka and advance its socioeconomic development. He said JICA would like to continue proactively cooperating with Sri Lanka in ways that meet its various development assistance needs.

JICA will continue its cooperation for Sri Lanka in a variety of sectors including infrastructure, public health and disaster risk reduction.
