JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka held talks at JICA Headquarters in Tokyo with Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, on Oct. 3.

Ms. Mohammed, who is responsible for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the U.N., stressed the importance of the participation of young people and the private sector for achieving the SDGs. At the same time, reforms within the United Nations are also essential, and the U.N. is working on reforms under the direction of Secretary General António Guterres, she added. During her visit to Japan she was deeply impressed by the efforts of private companies and young people on the SDGs and she would like to expand cooperation with JICA, she said.

Mr. Kitaoka wants JICA to strengthen coordination with the private sector in its cooperation with Africa, leveraging its experience in Southeast Asia, he said. He also indicated he recognizes the importance of reinforcing JICA's dialogue and collaboration with the U.N.

JICA will work in step with the U.N. to achieve the SDGs.
