JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka held talks with Filippo Grandi, United Nations high commissioner for refugees, at JICA Headquarters in Tokyo on Oct. 25.

They discussed the importance of further enhancing the humanitarian-development nexus in response to serious refugee situations requiring international solidarity.

Regarding the Rohingya crisis, they confirmed that the international community must continue to work together closely and steadily step up efforts to pursue solutions with deep understanding of the complexity of the crisis, which involves religion, culture, history and society. As for the protracted refugee situations in Africa, they reaffirmed that the humanitarian-development nexus is more important than ever and that JICA's long-standing support for host communities and support for refugees in self-reliance has been an effective approach.

Mr. Grandi said he hoped the two agencies would further strengthen their relationship ahead of the seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 7) to be held in August 2019.

JICA will continue contributing to addressing refugee situations in partnership with the UNHCR.
