JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka held talks with Gerda Verburg, the Coordinator of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement* on Feb. 13 at JICA Headquarters in Tokyo. Participants in SUN, which aims to improve nutrition, include national governments, U.N. agencies, aid agencies, civil society and private companies.

Ms. Verburg began the talks by thanking Mr. Kitaoka for Japan's continuous cooperation on SUN's activities. The two leaders then discussed how SUN and JICA should best partner to improve nutrition.

They had a shared fundamental understanding of and orientation toward (1) initiatives for nutrition improvement that go beyond the frameworks of sectors such as health care and education, especially the importance of agriculture, (2) Japan's leadership role in preparation for the 2020 Nutrition Summit to be held in Tokyo, and (3) making active use of Japan's expertise and experience.

JICA will continue working with partners including SUN to eradicate malnutrition.

*Note: A movement and framework for enhancing political commitment to and accountability on improving nutrition. The Japanese government contributed funding to help establish SUN. Sixty countries participate.
