JICA President Akihiko Tanaka took a business trip to New York City from May 21 to 23 and attended a high-level event hosted by the president of the United Nations General Assembly, also holding talks with U.N. prominent figures.

On May 21-22, at the U.N. headquarters, a high-level event sponsored by the president of the U.N. General Assembly took place. It was entitled "High-Level Event of the General Assembly on the Contributions of North-South, South-South, Triangular Cooperation, and ICT for Development to the Implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda." Tanaka participated as a panelist in a panel discussion held on May 22.

At present, in preparation for the 69th U.N. General Assembly in the autumn of 2014, debate is progressing in relation to development issues post-2015, the year when the current Millennium Development Goals end. It has been decided that the president of the U.N. General Assembly will hold six meetings on post-2015 development issues between February and June 2014, and this event was one of them*.

In the panel discussion on the morning of May 22, the second day of the event, Tanaka and Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and others, discussed the topic "How can all forms of cooperation, namely North-South, South-South and Triangular Cooperation, be strengthened to promote economic growth, employment and decent work for all?" Representatives of national governments and U.N. agencies, NGO stakeholders and others were in attendance.

Tanaka first shared his view on the situation of the world post-2015, and talked about basic principles for setting development goals and the main issues that should be addressed. Then, while commenting on examples of triangular cooperation JICA has been involved in, he explained that south-south cooperation and triangular cooperation play important roles with regard to post-2015 development challenges and touched upon how to strengthen such cooperation. In response to this, some of the audience gave positive evaluations on Japan's international cooperation, including triangular cooperation. For example, a representative of the Mexican government said, "The south-south and triangular cooperation Japan/JICA carried out in Mexico, including cooperation to establish a development cooperation agency, contributes to solving problems for beneficiary countries while helping to strengthen Mexico's capacity."

Before joining this event, Tanaka on May 21 met separately with John W. Ashe, 68th president of the U.N. General Assembly, Jan Eliasson, deputy secretary-general of the U.N., and Helen Clark, administrator of the U.N. Development Programme (UNDP). In his talks with Ashe, Tanaka shared JICA's position regarding the post-2015 development agenda and exchanged opinions. In talks between Eliasson and Tanaka, they discussed the ideal role of human security in post-2015 development issues. In addition, Clark and Tanaka agreed to steadily accumulate achievements in their partnership, towards their regularly scheduled meeting between the two agencies planned for autumn.
