JICA President Akihiko Tanaka visited the Kingdom of Morocco, which continues to grow at a steady rate, July 13 to 16. He held talks with key government officials including Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane and visited the sites of JICA projects in the country.

On July 14, Tanaka held talks with Benkirane, Salaheddine Mezouar, minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mohamed Boussaid, minister of Economy and Finance, Aziz Akhannouch, minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Aziz Rabbah, minister of Equipment, Transport and Logistics. He agreed with his counterparts to strengthen the partnership between Japan and Morocco with the goal of further economic growth in this country, which has achieved social stability and steady economic growth. In his talks with Mezouar, the Order of Ouissam Alaouite decoration was bestowed on Tanaka in recognition of JICA's many achievements in its various projects in Morocco. The decision to so decorate Tanaka was made by King Mohammed VI.

In his talks with his counterparts, Tanaka expressed appreciation for Morocco's understanding and support regarding JICA's projects in the country and said JICA will continue its cooperation based on the requests of the recipient country. Each minister talked about matters of concern to him and agreed with Tanaka to continue a dialogue with JICA, including about the details of its cooperation.

On July 15, Tanaka visited and observed at the Training Institute for Equipment and Road Maintenance (Grant Aid, Technical Cooperation and Volunteer Programs), the National Fisheries Research Institute (Grant Aid and Technical Cooperation) and the Casablanca South Ring Road Construction Project (Japanese ODA Loan Project). At each site, he confirmed the results of projects so far from Moroccan personnel in charge, JICA experts and JICA Senior Volunteers, and discussed with them how to put to use the results achieved so far, as well as future cooperation.

Tanaka also held discussions with Japanese companies with operations in Morocco, major development partners of JICA (the World Bank, the United Nations Population Fund, the Korea International Cooperation Agency, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and the Belgian Cooperation Agency) as well as the JICA Alumni Association of Morocco before departing for his next destination, Tunisia.
