JICA President Tanaka Visits China

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka on Dec. 14-16 visited Beijing, where he held talks with JICA project stakeholders and visited the sites of cooperation projects in China.

On Dec. 15, Tanaka held talks with Cao Jianlin, vice minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, China's main counterpart ministry for JICA's technical cooperation. Cao gave a high estimation of the results of 30 years of Japanese cooperation and said it is necessary to explore for a new cooperation formula going forward. Tanaka expressed appreciation for long years of cooperation with JICA and its China office from China's Ministry of Science and Technology.

In his talks with the All China Women's Federation, which as the largest women's organization in China, has a guidance role in the areas of improving women's social status and protecting the rights of women and children, Meng Xiaosi, the organization's vice president, spoke highly of and expressed appreciation for the results of the technical cooperation project, “Project for Capacity Development on Mental Health Services for Reconstruction Support of Sichuan Earthquake” (2009-2014), which JICA and the federation carried out together. Tanaka spoke about the fact that improving the status of women is an important policy pillar for the Japanese government and that JICA is carrying out various projects related to improving the status and protecting the rights of women.

One of Tanaka's site visits during his stay was to the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, which had its 30th anniversary this year and was built through grant aid from the Japanese government, and he held talks with Wand Chen, the hospital president. President Chen expressed appreciation for the grant aid and JICA's long years of technical cooperation. Moreover, there was an explanation to the effect that the technical cooperation had improved medical technology and cultivated significant medical human resources, that the hospital is in the top class in China, and that particular exchanges are being carried out between Japan and China in the medical field and support for human resource cultivation in inland districts that makes use of information and communications technology.

In addition to this, Tanaka visited the Beijing Hongdandan Education and Culture Exchange Center, an NGO that grapples with the living environment of the visually impaired through the provision of braille and talking books and radio programs and the like for them and which uses JICA Partnership Program with support from the Japan Braille Library. He also held a friendly talk with JICA training alumni who returned to their country after going to Japan for JICA research and acquiring doctorate or master's degrees in Japan. And he visited the Beijing Gaobeidian Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was supported with a Japanese ODA loan and completed in 1993. On Dec. 16, Tanaka left to return to Japan.
