JICA President Akihiko Tanaka held talks with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Tokyo on July 3. Dung was in Japan for the Mekong-Japan Summit Meeting.

"JICA's cooperation has greatly contributed to the development of Vietnam in recent years," Dung said at the beginning of the meeting.

Tanaka said he hopes the relationship between Japan and Vietnam will be strengthened by Dung's visit. He also mentioned his hope that infrastructure improvements through Japanese ODA will contribute to the socioeconomic development of Vietnam, referring to Terminal 2 of Noi Bai International Airport and the Nhat Tan Bridge (Vietnam-Japan Friendship Bridge), both of which opened in January of this year.

Dung went on to say, "We would like to request continuing strong support from JICA for the socioeconomic development of Vietnam."

Tanaka closed the meeting by saying, "Regarding future cooperation with Vietnam, we would like to confer with Vietnamese government officials and proactively consider it."
