[Tanzania] Yamamoto Co., Ltd. organized a seminar in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (July 9,2024)

2024.07.09

Yamamoto Co., Ltd. is an agricultural machinery manufacturer headquartered in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, specializing in the manufacturing and sale of post-harvest processing equipment such as grain dryers etc. As part of JICA’s Private Sector Partnership Program, the company organized a seminar in Tanzania, which was attended by AFICAT's focal persons (FPs) from the Ministry of Agriculture, Tanzania.

The seminar was held on July 9, 2024, at a hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city. Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Rice Council of Tanzania (RCT), the Small Industry Development Organization (SIDO), large-scale farms, and agricultural input suppliers were invited.

The theme of the seminar is pinned on maximizing profits by improving post-harvest processing using Batch Circulating Grain Dryers and Rice Milling Machines. Tanzania is the third-largest rice producer in Sub-Saharan Africa, following Nigeria and Madagascar (as of 2021). Traditionally, paddy rice is sun-dried after harvest; however, this method poses several challenges, including slow drying speed, labor intensiveness, inconsistent drying, high breakage rates, and reduced seed germination rates. During the seminar, Yamamoto Co., Ltd. introduced its vision of improving post-harvest processing using its technology to enhance paddy quality and contribute to increased rice production in Africa.
Active discussions and information exchange were held during the seminar. Participants raised questions about the potential use of solar energy as a power source for dryers, while the Ministry of Agriculture shared details about an ongoing 1,000-ton capacity warehouse construction project.

AFICAT supported activities of Yamamoto Co., Ltd. in Tanzania, including coordinating meetings with officials from the Ministry of Agriculture during their visit.
