[Nigeria] Visit to the Lagos International Trade Fair (November 9, 2024)
2025.06.12
Although AFICAT did not participate as an exhibitor, the AFICAT survey team and AFICAT focal persons visited the Japan Pavilion at the Lagos International Trade Fair held in November 2024. Focal persons from three Nigerian institutions participated in the visit: the Agribusiness and Marketing Development Department (ABM) of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM, based in Ilorin), and the Abuja office of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA).
According to the JETRO Lagos office, which organized the Japan Pavilion, this year’s event featured over 40 Japanese companies — the largest number ever. Among them, HONDA and STANDAGE notably expanded their displays of agricultural machinery and materials compared to the previous year. Exhibits included power sprayers, irrigation pumps, tillers, generators, and oil palm harvesters. AFICAT focal persons listened attentively to the explanations. Although not strictly agricultural, various pump technologies, refrigerant technologies, and machinery parts — such as tractor components, combine parts, fertilizer spreaders, seeders, air hoses, and truck tires — also drew interest from the focal persons.
We also visited other areas of the Trade Fair. However, booths from local agricultural companies were few, and most featured processed food products. According to JETRO, while interest in agricultural machinery is high, many exhibits in the Asia Pavilion (dominated by Chinese capital) are available for only a limited time. These topics sparked active discussion among the focal persons. Notably, some of them proposed that AFICAT consider hosting a dedicated desk to showcase agricultural machinery and related technologies at future events, given the current lack of agriculture-focused stands at the Japan Pavilion. The Pavilion includes a stage where AFICAT could also give presentations. The joint visit by the three AFICAT-related organizations fostered a stronger sense of unity and allowed for productive dialogue as we look ahead to next year.
