| Natural Resources and Energy | Paving the Ways of Energy Transition for Fossil Fuel Nations | Yokohama Center | English | The world has turned toward decarbonization. Many developed countries have declared carbon neutrality by 2050, and developing countries are aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 or 2070. It is impossible to realize a carbon-neutral society with only existing technologies such as solar power and wind power. The key is the development and introduction of next-generation decarbonization technologies. Also, no developing country will accept an energy transition that would impede their economic growth. In addition, the invasion of Ukraine has made energy supply unstable and expensive. Carbon neutrality and a stable supply of cheap energy must be achieved at the same time. And also regional approach such as the Asian Zero Emissions Community (AZEC) would be more rational to realize the goal. In this course, trainees will learn from Japanese energy policy organizations, universities, and companies about energy policies, technological innovation, and the promotion of regional approach. |

| Disaster Risk Reduction | Volcanic Disaster Risk Reduction and Management for Latin America | Hokkaido Center | Spanish | The frequency of volcanic eruption may be less than other disasters, once it happens the damage is serious. While structural countermeasures, for example erosion control dams, are indispensable, other measures such as monitoring volcanic activities & issuance of eraly warning, publishing hazard maps are also indispensable. Compared to the numerous active volcanos, there is a apparent lack of volcanoe experts in Latin America, in addition, the significance of human resource development for volcanic disaster risk management is not fully recognized, and the general public have a poor sense of volcanic disasters.Japan has many active volcanos and has rich experience with volcano monitoring and disaster risk management that can be shared; Also Japan would like to take this opportunity to learn from other countries' experience of volcanic disasters. |
