Invisible Gaps: Addressing the Financial Burden of Cancer Care toward Universal Health Coverage
Day:2025.03.21
event |
A growing crisis in cancer incidence and mortality has been observed in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In sub-Saharan Africa, cancer mortality is projected to double between 2020 and 2030, with annual deaths exceeding 1.1 million by 2030. Given the need for long-term medical care for cancer patients and limited government health spending, the financial burden of cancer care in LMICs has become substantial.
In this seminar, we invite three leading researchers to present their latest research findings and policy implications for the current efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage, ensuring access to necessary health care without excessive financial burden. Dr. Akiko Ida from the JICA Ogata Research Institute conducts research on the financial and social impact of cancer control policies in Africa. Dr. D. Watkins and Dr. B. Essue co-chair the health economics working group of the Lancet Commission on Cancer and Health Systems.
