The JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) has been publishing the Project History Series, which chronicles the trajectories and results of JICA projects. Published in August 2023, “Japanese Immigrants Who Supported the Development of Paraguay—The Achievements That Made Paraguay the World’s Fourth Largest Soybean Exporter and an Implementer of New Initiatives for Industrial Diversification” is the fourth of the Japanese-language installments published in the series thus far to be translated into English, with the objective of reaching a wider international audience.

Paraguay’s soybean production for 2018–2019 boosted the country to the fourth rank among the world’s largest soybean exporters. Soybean exports are significant sources of Paraguay’s foreign currency and contribute to its economic development. However, it is not widely known that the first collective soybean cultivation in Paraguay was achieved by Japanese immigrants who settled in the country approximately 80 years ago and that commercial soybean farming was established through the devoted efforts of their communities.

The present book illustrates the historical contribution of Japanese immigrants to the Paraguayan economy, including in the following industries: the processing of agricultural commodities from integrated and multiple-crop farming that have been expanded from soybean farming; sesame production, an industry that is new to the country; and the auto parts industry.
