New Video Releases: Explainers on the Effectiveness of Intervention Packages for School Management in Madagascar and Textbook Distribution in El Salvador

2024.05.08

Since the early 2000s, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has supported sub-Saharan African countries, including Niger and Madagascar, with intervention packages constituting school management and pedagogical practices. Maruyama Takao, a senior research fellow at the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development, investigated the effectiveness of the intervention package introduced in Madagascar using a randomized controlled trial. In a recently released video titled “Community-wide Support to Improve Foundational Literacy and Numeracy: Evidence from Madagascar,” he explains the effectiveness of community-wide support in improving children’s literacy and numeracy (a version with French subtitles is also available).

Maruyama also explains in another video titled “Developing Textbooks to Improve Math Learning in Primary Education: Evidence from El Salvador” how an intervention package introduced by JICA in El Salvador, which included the distribution of textbooks that were carefully designed to improve math learning, resulted in better teaching practices and learning outcomes (a version with Spanish subtitles is also available).
