JICA Ogata Research Institute and the SDSN Launch Joint Research on the Indicator Framework for the Post-2030 Agenda

JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) have launched a joint research initiative to develop concrete recommendations for the global indicator framework beyond the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This new collaboration aims to deliver evidence-based insights to inform global discussions on the future of monitoring sustainable development.

With formal UN discussions on the post-2030 Agenda expected to begin in 2027, the collaboration will assess key lessons learned from the current Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator framework, examine ongoing data and reporting challenges, and propose more streamlined, operational approaches to tracking sustainable development progress.

The initiative will mobilize global experts from academia, national statistical offices, and international organizations through surveys, webinars, and in-person events. It will also include targeted statistical research aimed at producing policy-relevant and practical proposals.

Reflecting on the launch of the initiative, Mine Yoichi , Executive Director of the JICA Ogata Research Institute, stated, “The SDSN is a global hub of knowledge networks to advance the SDGs and JICA is one of the major bilateral development cooperation agencies. By combining our respective strengths, we can generate meaningful synergies and contribute to shaping the future of sustainable development monitoring.”

Professor Jeffrey Sachs, President of the SDSN, commented, “The SDGs have shown the power of global goals, but also the complexity of tracking them. As we look beyond 2030, the world will need a more coherent, rigorous, and practical framework for measuring sustainable development. Our partnership with JICA will help UN Member States to design an indicator system that is practical enough for countries to implement and strong enough to guide real progress toward ending poverty, protecting the planet, and achieving sustainable prosperity.”

Running from April 2026 through March 2028, the collaboration will conclude with a final report to be submitted to the UN Secretary-General and the broader UN system, outlining proposals for the post-2030 indicator framework.

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network has been operating since 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. The SDSN mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
