Utilized the material at the online seminar

PhotoIn the seminar, we invited Mr. Anuj Dayal, the Principal Executive Director of the Public Relations Department as a speaker, who appears in the material.

On September 28th, 2022, we screened JICA-Net multimedia-based learning materials, "Changing People's Lives with the Delhi Metro - JICA's Cooperation for Building the Delhi Metro -" (Youtube, external link), at the Online Seminar Series: Commemorating 70 years anniversary of Japan-India diplomatic relation "Changing People's Lives through the Development of Delhi Metro in India"

The purpose of the seminar is to disseminate the project history and lesson learnt from the Delhi Metro project, which is known as Shining Example of Japan - India cooperation to Japanese citizens. In the seminar, we invited Mr. Anuj Dayal, the Principal Executive Director of the Public Relations Department as a speaker, who appears in the material, and he explained how Delhi Metro, which is one of the biggest metro in the world today, brought a dynamic change and impact on people's daily lives, environment, values, and the whole society in India.

Delhi Metro changed people's lives and behaviors in India

PhotoDelhi Metro transports about 5 million passengers each day spanning a total distance of about 390 km today.

Delhi Metro is a popular means of transportation in India's capital.

With the interviews to the members of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and JICA, the material introduced that Delhi Metro, as known as the shining example of the Japan-India partnership, has brought various positive impacts to the society, which can be examplified by : 1. increase of safety awareness toward construction and operation stages, 2. high reliability of punctual public services, 3. introduction of women only car and vulnerable-users-friendly designs, and 4. improvement of air pollution and traffic congestion.

Since 1995, before Delhi Metro began operations, JICA has been contributing to the development of Delhi Metro making it as safe, reliable, and affordable means of transportation as it is today.

What Delhi Metro has brought to India is not only the convenience of transportation. Delhi Metro is also known as a safe way of transportation for women in India. By integrating women only cars and security cameras introduced by Japan, the use of the Delhi Metro by women increased and therefore strengthened woman's empowerment.

Moreover, in India, where serious air pollution has been spreading due to traffic congestion, the increasing use of the Delhi Metro is expected to curb greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles and other vehicles, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 530,000 tons per year between 2011 and 2018.

Spread the fruit of international cooperation between Japan and India

The material was screened after the presentation by the speaker. There were more than 70 participants in the seminar.

According to the questionnaire after the seminar, 80% of respondents answered "good", or "very good". In particular, we received positive responses such as "India seems to be good at introducing a new thing considering the history that some religions are originated in India. I was also very amazed by the metro. Wonderful.", "I was impressed that the introduction of the women only-car had led women's empowerment in India.", "I was able to understand vividly about how people in India view the contribution of Delhi metro thanks to the photos and comments shown in the seminar", and "I was able to comprehend very well about JICA's cooperation with Delhi Metro, especially regarding qualitative effect it brought.". It seems that the participants of the seminar has deepened their understanding about Delhi metro.

The educational material briefly summarizes Delhi Metro's achievements with concrete examples and is only 11 minutes long, so it can be used in a variety of cases, including seminars, as educational material for international cooperation classes, and for showing in exhibition halls.

I hope that the material is helpful for people to deepen their understanding about JICA's international contribution to India's society, and arouse the interest in international cooperation.
