Joint Research with the Brookings Institution on 'Leave No One Behind,' Addressing a Central Promise of the SDGs

The JICA Research Institute (JICA-RI) and the Brookings Institution have been conducting joint research on effective aid since 2010 and have published four books. (See "Research Outcome" at the bottom.)

The research theme this time is "Leave No One Behind," a core theme in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth in the "The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," which was adopted at the United Nations in 2015 as a set of new development goals.

The research aims to make proposals for achieving an inclusive society by identifying “people,” “places” and “problems” likely to be left behind, while learning from existing good practices and highlighting the need to scale them up and issues for consideration. Rather than letting "Leave No One Behind" remain a slogan, it aims to offer perspectives useful for translating it into concrete actions. The research findings led to the publication of "Leave No One Behind: Time for Specifics on the Sustainable Development Goals," a book for practitioners, researchers and policy-makers that is rich in academic and policy implications.

From JICA-RI, Director Izumi Ohno, Executive Senior Research Fellow Saeda Makimoto, Research Fellows Eji Yamada and Enerelt Murakami, and Visiting Scholar Akira Murata took part in this research.
