Cooperation between la JICA and IFAD: Implementation of the SHEP approach in the framework of the PAFA4R/PAPFA

On May 24 2022, training material on the SHEP[1] (small-holder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion) approach was donated by Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) office in Burkina Faso to the Project for the Promotion of Agricultural Sectors (PAPFA).

The donation consisting of manuals on the SHEP approach for extension officers and illustrated manuals for producers was made on the sidelines of a meeting between JICA officials of the agriculture sector and office the PAPFA officials in the presence of the Country Representative of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

First of all, the PAPFA's Coordinator took this opportunity to give a brief background and context of the SHEP approach experimentation in the framework of the Project. He ended by extending his appreciation to JICA for this channel for cooperation between the two institutions and by reaffirming the PAPFA's commitment to promoting the SHEP approach's dissemination among producers in the regions of intervention of the Project.

In fact, the SHEP approach is implemented in the framework of PAFA4R/PAPFA (Agricultural value chains support project/in the South-West, Hauts Bassins, Cascades and Boucle du Mouhoun Regions/ Agricultural value chains promotion project), Financed by IFAD, and targeting vulnerable young people in it's areas of intervention. The vision of the Project is to improve the productivity of smallholders, create an added value on agricultural products and encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship. As part of this collaboration, JICA has contributed to the training of several PAFA4R/PAPFA agronomists who in turn transfer their knowledge to the Project's agricultural advisers, who finally train producers on the approach and support them in its implementation.

Note

  • [1] The SHEP approach is an approach to support small-scale horticultural farmers promoted by JICA, and aims to raise the small-holders income by converting their from "grow and sell" to "grow to sell", and their improving farming and cultivation skills. Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been promoting the dissemination of the SHEP approach, with a focus on fostering government officials and extension officials who will be responsible for agricultural dissemination.
