JICA signs the grant agreement for the establishment of CUSPH Outpatient Facility

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed on 16th of June 2019 the grant agreement for the establishment of Cairo University Specialized Pediatric Hospital (CUSPH) Outpatient Facility as an extension to a long history of cooperation between Egypt and Japan to support the health sector in Egypt.

H.E. Dr. Sahar Nasr, Minister of Investment and International Cooperation and H.E. Mr. Masaki Noke, Japanese Ambassador to Egypt, signed the Exchange of Notes for the grant. Afterwards, H.E. Prof. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Mr. Iwasaki Akihiro, Senior Representative of JICA Egypt Office, signed the grant agreement worth JPY 1,983 million to establish the project.

Mr. Iwasaki praised during his opening statement the results of this cooperation project as the CUSPH has held lifesaving operations and medical intervention to a huge number of Egyptian children since its establishment.

Prof. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar expressed his gratitude to the Japanese government and JICA for their support through funding the CUSPH construction, giving trainings to the staff and providing the equipment needed.

The cooperation history between JICA and Egypt in the CUSPH project dates back to the International Year of Child in 1979, when the Egyptian government has prioritized policies that would improve the standard of pediatric health care. In support of these aims, the government of Japan supported the construction of the CUSPH through an investment of 4 billion JPY to establish the CUSPH, which became is now known as "The Japanese Hospital". This project had been succeeded by a couple of extensions in 1986-1988 and 1993-1995. Now, JICA will provide JPY 1,983 million to establish the 7-floors building behind the main one to help receiving the young patients as well as enhancing the work environment at the hospital to provide better services for the Egyptian citizens.
