"Africa Day" was held at Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology for the second time

E-JUST Africa Day, an event for strengthening the network between E-JUST and African countries, was held at the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) on 2nd November for the second time.

The event brought together African ambassadors and deputy ambassadors in Egypt from 14 countries and was attended by approximately 60 current E-JUST international students.

The event included speeches by Japanese Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Mr. NOKE Masaki, Minister of Higher Education H.E. Prof. Khaled Abdel Ghafar (as a video message), and JICA Egypt Office Chief Representative Mr. OMURA Yoshifumi, as well as African and Japanese cultural performances and booths, and open discussion on SDGs, and campus tours etc.

Japanese Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Mr. NOKE, the guest of honor, pointed out to the visit of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to E-JUST in September 2020 and the acceptance of scholars at TICAD7, and expressed the willingness of both Egypt and Japan to cooperate with African countries in partnership, and the importance of the role played by African Ambassadors in this regard.

Mr. OMURA Yoshifumi, Chief Representative of JICA Egypt Office, expressed his gratitude to those involved in the realization of the TICAD exchange student program and gave a message of encouragement to the students.

In addition, a student from Uganda took the stage on behalf of international students. Using the words of former South African President Nelson Mandela and others, he expressed his strong determination to live his student life with ambitions for the future, knowing that his study would lead to the future of his country.

Cultural performances from Africa and Japan featured singing and dancing on stage. At the booths of each country, traditional costumes, food, and music were introduced. Through these events, the ambassadors of each country interacted with the international students, and the international students also got strong bonds with each other. Egyptian students were also interested in the exhibition and enjoyed experiencing the culture of other countries between lectures.

In this way, it was great opportunity for African ambassadors to deepen their understanding of E-JUST, and a valuable time for many international students from African countries, including TICAD scholars, to interact with ambassadors from their home countries and Egyptian students.

This event was an important opportunity to show the concrete progress of E-JUST's acceptance of African students (150 students) for science and technology human resource development as announced by the Egyptian and Japanese governments at TICAD7 in 2019, and to show the presence as a hub university in Africa towards TICAD 8. In total, 58 international students are scheduled to be welcomed by E-JUST in the fall semester of 2021.

From the students to the ambassadors, this event once again brought the international nature of E-JUST to many stakeholders, and we look forward to further promoting cross-cultural exchange at E-JUST in the future.

In addition, at the beginning of the event, Japanese Ambassador in Egypt, H.E. Mr. NOKE handed over the Foreign Minister's Commendation to the Director of E-JUST Liberal Arts Culture Center, Dr. Hamza, for his efforts in promoting Japanese studies in Egypt for many years. Ambassador NOKE expressed his respect and gratitude for the efforts over the years and for deepening the ties between the two countries through the introduction of Japanese education.
