What kind of world do you want to see in 2030?

The year 2023 marks the halfway point toward the achievement of the SDGs in 2030, which was adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Moreover, the United Nations hosted the quadrennial "SDG Summit" this year. SDGs attract more attention and reaffirm their importance in the worldwide as well as in Japan.
For that reason, we developed JICA-Net multimedia-based learning material, “We are the creators of 2030~JICA’s initiatives for achieving the SDGs~”(YouTube, external link), as a tool to effectively communicate JICA's SDG initiatives around the world.

JICA initiatives from various perspectives.

First, the material explains the current situation surrounding the SDGs from the past to the present and JICA’s contribution so far. Next, it introduces 5 concrete examples of JICA’s initiatives:

A program aimed at solving both the problems of Japan’s lack of IT resources and Bangladesh’s need for more employment opportunities.

“Improvement of livelihoods and well-being of female home-based workers in the informal economic sector” in Pakistan aiming for the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment, “Cooperation in the field of Water Supply” in Cambodia which is a fruit of JICA’s long-term achievements and trust, “Project NINJA(Next Innovation with Japan)” creating innovations in partnership with developing countries, “Platform for Sustainable Cocoa in Developing Countries” connecting diverse actors, “Bangladesh-Miyazaki ICT Engineers’ Educational Training” showing a new style of international cooperation to solve issues for both Japan and developing countries.
In this way, the material explains the path to the achievement of the SDGs easily from various viewpoints.

Simple vocabularies are used so that children and students are able to understand easily. And you can see project examples from various perspectives with a lot of interviews with various stakeholders such as consultants, local government workers, academicians, JICA staff, and private sectors.

As an opportunity for everyone to think

The material is useful not only for the general public who are interested in international cooperation, the SDGs and JICA, but also for training material for those who are engaged in JICA projects.
The material could be useful in various situations such as school classes, training programs, and seminars, etc.
I hope the material would be an opportunity readers to think global issues as “our own business” and would become an opportunity for each one of us to think about what kind of world would like to create.
