JICA's Basic Education Cooperation
JICA has conducted education cooperation for over 150 developing countries since the 1960s.
Education is a fundamental right that should be enjoyed equally by all people. Based on Japan’s past experiences in education, JICA has conducted education cooperation for over 150 developing countries since the 1960s.
We have created the JICA-Net multimedia-based learning material, “Quality Education where each individual shines with vitality —JICA's Basic Education Cooperation—” (YouTube, external link), to inform not only those involved in international cooperation but also the public about JICA's education cooperation widely. The purpose of this video is to convey in an easy-to-understand manner how JICA provides education cooperation, as well as JICA's history in supporting basic education.
To convey difficult issues in a simply and easy- to understand matter
The material begins with an explanation of the evolution of JICA’s education cooperation, using diagrams, and focus on educational issues facing the world. Then, it introduces JICA’s 3 approaches in basic education cooperation to contribute to the achievement of SDGs goal 4, “Quality Education”: “Improving learning through the development of textbooks and learning materials”, “Community-wide collaboration”, and “Improving education for leaving no one behind”, along with practical examples.
An example of “Community-wide collaboration”, one of three approaches to JICA’s cooperation in basic education.
we used videos and photos that had been created for each project previously to convey the local situation as much as possible.
When creating the video, we paid attention to how simply we could explain the cluster, which was difficult to be understood on paper.
For that purpose, we intended the advisors to explain directly in the video. We think the process of the meeting with the advisors was also important to find a way to convey difficult information in a simple and short way.
In addition, we decided to use videos and photos that had been created for each project previously to convey the local situation as much as possible, which was the chance to utilize the assessment of the project.
Utilizing for public relations, training and events
It could be used in various situations because the content of the material is summarized within only 15 minutes.
We will publicize the material not only in public relations magazines but also by using it as a pre-learning of JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Programs (uploaded in JICA-VAN※) and screening it before and after events or during the recess, for example, a consultant study meeting, a capacity strengthening training, etc., where those involved gather.
Also, we translated the material into 3 languages: English, French, and Spanish. So, we would like to promote the use, especially to overseas offices to reach national staff and counterparts.
We hope that the material could give an opportunity for more people to know and understand JICA’s education cooperation deeply.
- ※JICA-VAN (JICA Virtual Academy & Network) is a continuous mutual learning and knowledge sharing platform created for all stakeholders and beneficiaries of the JICA project.
