In the Soviet era, Uzbekistan was a monoculture economy that survived on cotton farming, but in 1991 it became independent and transitioned into a market economy. Under the economic control of the state, gradual economic reforms have been implemented.
The Uzbekistan-Japan Center is engaged in the training of business personnel that makes up the foundations of the market economy, and to the end of fiscal 2010 it had trained around 3000 people. Among these, the Professional Management Program (PMP), which is one of the core courses offered at the Center, has been highly evaluated and well noticed as a type of "mini MBA", in which students can learn practical business skills.
