Monthly Highlights of Research Activities: The 8th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research Will be Held in Nagasaki, Japan From November 18 to 22

JICA and Nagasaki University, together with other local and international partners, will host the 8th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (HSR) in Nagasaki, from November 18 to 22. This is the first time the Symposium will be held in Japan.

HSR is a biennial international conference on health systems and policy research, organized by Health Systems Global, a world-wide organization devoted to strengthening health policy and systems research to improve global health, equity, and well-being for everyone.

It will bring together around 1,500 participants from around the world, including academics, policymakers, and members of international organizations such as the WHO, to discuss health systems and policies from a variety of perspectives.

Principal Research Fellows Takizawa Ikuo and Makimoto Saeda, and Research Fellow Ida Akiko of the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) will speak at the symposium. JICA will also organize eight satellite sessions that will be open to the public.

News | Principal Research Fellow Makimoto Saeda Contributes to the Lancet Report “Global Health 2050: The path to halving premature death by mid-century”

Principal Research Fellow Makimoto Saeda of the JICA Ogata Research Institute has contributed to the third report from the Lancet Commission on Investing in Health titled, “Global Health 2050: The path to halving premature deaths by mid-century,” published in October 2024. This report series sets out a path for improving well-being in the world through strategic investments in the health sector.

Project | Intervention Study on Unintended Teenage Pregnancy in Uganda

For a better understanding on the behavior of Ugandan teenagers and the available social resources, this study will develop a new intervention modality to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) among teenagers through mobile money shops and verify its effectiveness. To check the outcomes of the four-month intervention and to prepare for an endline study, Research Fellow Komasawa Makiko visited Uganda in September 2024.

Project | The Socio-Economic Impact and Challenges of Non-Communicable Diseases in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

In recent years, the number of premature deaths from Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has dramatically increased. This study seeks to demonstrate the socio-economic impact of NCDs in LMICs and to identify the necessary policy challenges for promoting their control through a systematic review of the literature and a case study of the situation in Burkina Faso.

Project | COVID-19 Study for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Resilient Society

While reforms to global health mechanisms are being discussed by the international community, it is essential to grasp the actual situation in each country, as these are still not sufficiently understood. In order to clarify the actual conditions in countries around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic and to demonstrate effective measures to control them, this research project centers on the following themes: 1. infectious disease research and early warning systems; 2. infectious disease diagnosis and treatment systems; and 3. infectious disease prevention and health crisis preparedness.
