Project for Improvement of Power Distribution System

Name: Project for Improvement of Power Distribution System

Scheme: Grant Aid

Period: September 2013 - August 2015 (tentative)

Component: Construction of two primary substations (transformers (34.5/11.5kV), sub-transmission lines (34.5kV) and distribution lines (11.5kV).

Background

* Modernisation and expansion of the power infrastructure has been a high priority in Ghana's policy papers, such as "Ghana Vision 2020".

* Despite the electrification rate of 66%, Ghana has suffered a high distribution loss and a poor reliability of supply.

* JICA has been cooperating in the power sector, 1) "Power Distribution System Master Plan Study for Ghana (2006)", and 2) five projects of rural electrifications.

Objectives

* To provide reliable and stable electricity at cost effective price to the people of Ghana.

* To renew, reinforce and extend the existing power distribution systems in Tamale and Sunyani.

Activities

* Construction of primary substations and procurement of cables in project areas.
