Climate Change Measures in the Field of Agricultural and Rural Development Cooperation
Strategies for Climate Change Measures in Agricultural and Rural Development Cooperation
In recent years, natural disasters such as floods and droughts, which have increased in frequency due to climate change, are undermining not only agricultural production but also the foundations of rural life.
To achieve “human security,” it is critical and urgent to promote sustainable agricultural and rural development in developing countries through addressing climate change.
JICA has formulated the “Strategy for Climate Change Measures in Agricultural and Rural Development Cooperation” in October 2024 with the aim of clarifying the impacts of climate change—which are expected to become even more pronounced in the future—on the agricultural and rural sectors, as well as the impacts of our projects on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and to provide our stakeholders with a roadmap to conduct necessary measures.
Basic Guidelines for Promoting Participatory Irrigation Management in Response to Climate Change
Recently, the impact of natural disasters such as floods and droughts, which are due to climate change has become increasingly evident, making the consideration of countermeasures an urgent priority in the field of agricultural and rural development.
The promotion of Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) is an effective measure to address climate change that can contribute not only to strengthening resilience to natural disasters but also to improving water use efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. JICA has compiled key considerations and directions for applying PIM with experience in Japan into these Basic Guidelines and Activity Reference in June 2025.
