A New Highway for Bujumbura

PhotoThe new road being built in Bujumbura shall reduce congestion in the town drastically

Come next year and motorists in Bujumbura, the capital city of Burundi, shall be enjoying driving on a brand new paved road financed by the Japanese Government and a part of which has a beautiful view of Lake Tanganyika.

The 3km road shall reduce the traffic jams experienced during the rush hours by providing an alternative by pass to the western part of the city and close to the port. It has benefited from a grant aid to Burundi from Japan amounting to 2.7 billion Yen signed in June 2010 for the rehabilitation of roads and infrastructure in Bujumbura. This is a city of about 400,000 people.

The project involves widening and paving of the existing road, construction of drainage and bridges.
