JICA Volunteers (JOCV batch 2018-01) end term

On 30 June 2020, nine (9) volunteers held online final presentations, marking the end of their 2-year service, which ended on 9 July 2020.

The volunteers worked in the fields of; Community Development, Food crops and Rice culture, Physical Education and Automobile Maintenance field at/with Government offices and schools in Hoima, Mbale, Rakai, Mayuge, Buikwe, Jinja, Kapchorwa, and Soroti.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all JICA volunteers had to return to Japan in late March and were not able to return. The last 4 months of their 2-year service would have been the most fruitful where they would be able to achieve their planned targets but their contribution left a mark on counterparts and the improve lives of local people.

We appreciate the volunteers' counterparts and communities where they worked, plus their commitment to serve the communities.

MR. KUSHIYAMA

Mr. KUSHIYAMA has been working at Mayuge District Local Government since July 2018, and terminated his activity earlier due to COVID-19. He supported the community in generating income by making sandals from used tyres.

Mr. Kittawo Charles, a Community Development Officer, commended Mr. Kushiyama for his innovation from which user communities are generating income. "Right now we know how to make sandles and communities are using it as a source of income. We pray that if this pandemic ends, JICA gives us another chance. Thank you".

Farewell message from Mr. Kushiyama

I would like to thank all those who helped me during my stay and work in Uganda. The time I spent there is unforgettable. The making of tyre sandals, an income generating activity, became more popular than I expected and all the members really appreciate JICA's support.

Goodbye. To say hello again!

MR. EGASHIRA

Mr. TAKU Egashira has been working at Buikwe District Local Government and supporting the community since July 2018. Like other volunteers in this batch (2018-01), he terminated his activity earlier due to COVID-19.

"I was assigned to Buikwe district water office as a community development officer and worked on improvement of people livelihood through solving water, hygiene and sanitation problems. Unfortunately, I had to leave Uganda in mid-term, but I would like to give back this experience to the society in Japan".
