Background

ABE Initiative (African Business Education Initiative for Youth) is a program that offers opportunities for African youths to study Masters Courses at Japanese Universities as international students and also experience internships at Japanese companies. It aims at fostering young personnel who can contribute to the development of industries in Africa and become "navigators" for Japanese firms in Africa.

At the 5th Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development (TICAD V), held in 2013, the government of Japan launched the "ABE Initiative", based on the conviction that it is important to promote (A) education of human resources through vocational training and higher education that directly lead them to career opportunities, and (B) human exchanges between Japan and Africa.

At TICAD VI, held in 2016, continuation of the program was announced, and at the TICAD 7 held in Yokohama in 2019, "ABE Initiative 3.0" was announced which would invite 3,000 African youths to Japan over next 6 years.

More than 1,200 participants from all the 54 countries have joined the program since 2014, and over 950 participants completed. This has contributed to establishing a wide range of human resource network of ABE Initiative participants. Furthermore, many Japanese companies and ABE Initiative participants have collaborated in various ways to promote private sectors development in Africa.
