JICA, BNPC & MoWH Launch 5S/KAIZEN for Extension 2 Clinic

JICA Botswana Office, Ministry of Health and Wellness, Botswana National Productivity Centre (BNPC) launched a KAIZEN Implementation Project at Extension 2 Clinic, in Gaborone. The purpose of this KAIZEN implementation is to improve the quality of health care by eliminating waste of time and movement, which in most cases compromises quality and service to clients.

"KAIZEN" is a Japanese word and is known worldwide as continuous problem solving process to improve working environment, processes, and conditions. This approach uses management resources such as man, machine, material, method and information by the use of 5S, which are Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize and Sustain to improve processes.

Under the recent difficult time, we were looking for contribution measures to tackle against Covid-19 in Botswana by using Japanese cooperation assets. BNPC is the national machinery to promote productivity and quality management in Botswana and has long history to collaborate with the Japan Productivity Center and JICA in terms of strengthening capacity of KAIZEN. Both parties have agreed to make cooperation to carry out KAIZEN in a model clinic in views of 5S and roll out the good practice entire Botswana.

In Japan, KAIZEN in health sector is quite normal for overcoming time-sensitive situation with customer friendly attitude. At the end of the launch ceremony, the chief of JICA mission donated DVD made by JICA "What's KAIZEN in healthcare" to Ministry of Health and Wellness and the clinic.

Ministry of Health and Wellness officials including the clinic management expressed gratitude towards JICA for the opportunity and assured them that they will continue to work together to provide quality service to their clients and uphold the Clinic's good reputation.
